PhD Position (m/f/d) on Adaptation policy and actions for infectious diseases under climate change

The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), a scientific organizational entity of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, located in Hamburg, invites applications for a PhD Position, starting September 1st, 2022, on Adaptation policy and actions for infectious diseases under climate change. The position is limited to 31st of August 2025.

Equality of opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy.

GERICS develops scientifically based prototype products and services to support decision-makers in politics, business and public administration in adapting to climate change. We are located in the historic "Chilehaus" in Hamburg.

The goal of the IDAlert project is to co-create novel policy-relevant pan-European indicators that track past, present, and future climate-induced disease risk across hazard, exposure, and vulnerability domains at the animal, human and environment interface. In the project, we will generate tools to assess cost-benefit of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures across sectors and scales, and reveal novel policy entry points and opportunities.
The position aims to understand the interactions between climate changes and health, taking into account internal variability, extreme events, and unexpected side effects, addressing the natural and social spheres as well as their interactions.

Your tasks:

  • Analyse city and urban climate adaptation measures and interactions with infectious disease occurrence and spreading.
  • Hold interviews with policymakers and health experts on health interventions and urban adaptation.
  • Develop a participatory modelling exercise to test the adaptation measures with users.
  • Co-design a web-interface for accessing the project results and modeling components.
  • Test and evaluate the web-interface with users.

Your profile:

  • M.Sc. degree in Ecological Economics, Environmental Economics, System Dynamics, Agricultural Economics, Health Economics or Environmental Engineering
  • Experience in participatory processes and stakeholder interaction
  • Capacity for teamwork in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)
  • German and Spanish language skills are desirable
  • Additionally, we welcome knowledge on version control systems (i.e., git), Python, Fortran, and System Dynamics and integrative modelling

We offer:

  • multinational work environment with ca. 1,100 colleagues from more than 50 nations
  • extensive options of vocational training (i. a. expert seminars, language courses or leadership seminars)
  • flexible working hours and various models to ensure the compatibility of family and career
  • excellent infrastructure, including a scientific in-house library as well as modern work spaces
  • remuneration according to the standards of the collective wage agreement TV-AVH including further social benefits
  • free employee advice - Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • PhD Buddy Program
  • Welcome Office, guest accommodation

Severely disabled persons and those equaling severely disabled persons who are equally suitable for the position will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
