Secretariats at GERICS

The Earth League

In early 2013, GERICS was substantially involved in establishing the Earth League. The Earth League is an international alliance of leading research institutions and scientists, who work together to respond to some of the most pressing issues faced by humankind including climate change, depletion of natural resources, land degradation, water scarcity, or food security.

The Earth League secretariat is operated jointly by GERICS, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the Global Futures Laboratory of Arizona State University (ASU) in the USA. Its responsibilities include the organization of international workshops, media coordination, support in coordination of the international Earth League post-doc programme, coordination of publications, and management of the Earth League website and newsletter.

WCRP CORA

Since September 2018 GERICS and Bjerknes Center for Climate Research (BCCR) co-organize the regional activities of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP). For this purpose, at both centers the “Coordination Office for Regional Activities” (CORA) was established simultaneously.

The secretariat will identify opportunities, resources and partners to promote regional climate science to address key challenges and objectives under the WCRP Strategic Plan 2019-2029. In addition, it will support the integration and pooling of regional activities within the WCRP in collaboration with all WCRP bodies, and in particular with the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX). The cooperation was agreed on for an initial period from September 2018 – December 2021.

DKN Future Earth

Since May 1st, 2019, GERICS hosts the Secretariat of the DKN Future Earth. As a scientific advisory body and national platform for research in the context of the international programmes „Future Earth: research for global sustainability“ and the World Climate Research Programme WCRP, the DKN fosters the international and national dialogue about global sustainability science. The DKN members are appointed by the Executive Committee of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation). For the period 2019 - 2021, the DKN is chaired by GERICS head Daniela Jacob and includes eight additional members with expertise from different research fields.

The DKN Future Earth Secretariat supports the DKN members by coordinating, organizing and preparing initiatives and activities of the committee. As national contact point for Future Earth and WCRP, the DKN Secretariat is involved in many international activities and publishes information about ongoing developments.

Climate Services Partnership (CSP)

In the frame of the worldwide Climate Services Partnership (CSP), GERICS has a leading role. GERICS was substantially involved in establishing the international CSP in 2010. CSP is an informal, interdisciplinary network of climate information users, providers, donors and researchers. The platform helps to share knowledge exchange and cooperation in the field of climate services. The CSP secretariat is hosted by GERICS since June 2015. The basic tasks of the secretariat include the creation of the CSP Newsletter, the management of the CSP website, and the organization of the Fifth International Conference on Climate Services (ICCS5) in Capetown, South Africa.

Editorial Office of Journal „Climate Services“

The new Journal „Climate Services“, which has been initiated jointly by GERICS and Elsevier, is online since June 2015. Chief Editor is GERICS director Daniela Jacob. Experts from different disciplines constitute the journal’s editorial board. So far no journal existed in the field of climate services, which addressed both scientist and experts in practical applications. This gap is now closed. The editorial office of the journal is managed by GERICS.
