WASCAL Science Symposium 2022 in Ouagadougou/Burkina-Faso
From 6 to 9 December 2022, the WASCAL Science Symposium (WASS 2022) took place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. GERICS, represented by Dr. Torsten Weber, informed the audience about the interaction process between scientists and end-users to co-design a Decision Support System (DSS) that is being developed within the LANDSURF project. The procedure of this process was recorded in an "interaction protocol" to facilitate the involvement of end-users in the development of a climate service product in future projects.
The aim of WASS 2022 was to show the latest achievements of WASCAL as well as to discuss with relevant stakeholders the state of research and future initiatives for sustainable development and better living conditions in West Africa. Specifically, the contributions to WASS 2022 focused on the preliminary WRAP2.0 results and the WASCAL research priorities (RT), which were presented in the following sub-sessions:
- Land use/ land cover (LULC), Climate smart Agriculture and food security
- Climate risk and vulnerability: monitoring, mitigation, and adaptability strategies
- Water Resources Managementy
- Renewable Energy and Bio-economy
- Rural-urban and cross border migration and transboundary security
- Big Data management and information Technology
The “West African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Use” (WASCAL) is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is implemented in a collaborative effort by the West African countries Bénin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sénegal, Togo and Germany.
