The German IIASA Networking Event "Systems Analysis for a Sustainable and Peaceful Future" took place on 17 September at the PIK in Potsdam. The event, organised by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), was dedicated to Sub-Saharan Africa and focused on "Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) beyond 2030: Focus on Sub-Saharan Africa", "Capacity Building" and "Science Diplomacy".
GERICS, represented by Dr Torsten Weber, used the example of the BMBF-funded CICLES project to show how the project supports science diplomacy. CICLES is a joint project between the WASCAL Competence Centre in Burkina Faso and GERICS in Hamburg, which develops demand-oriented climate services for West Africa.

In a subsequent panel discussion with IIASA Director Prof. H.J. Schellnhuber, Dr T. Beuchelt and Dr T. Weber, the topic of "Science Diplomacy" was discussed and questions from the audience were answered.
WASCAL is the abbreviation for "West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use". The West African countries Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sénégal and Togo are involved in the institution.
