Apl.-Prof. Dr. Steffen Bender is Chair of the coasts, cities and regions department at the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. His main fields of work are: i) climate change impacts on urban areas and associated “critical” infrastructure, ii) the analysis of climate impacts on terrestrial water systems as well as iii) the development of climate services for cities/municipalities to support their adaptation activities with respect to climate impacts.
After the studying chemistry and geology at Heidelberg and Kiel Steffen Bender graduated at the LMU Munich and did his qualification as a university lecturer for applied geology at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. During this period he worked as a project coordinator for national and international interdisciplinary projects with the main emphasis on transboundary, integrated water management. Later he started a career as a hydrogeologist for companies in the field of engineering geology with a focus on groundwater related questions such as water right applications or groundwater modelling.
Since 2003 Steffen Bender is working as a lecturer at the Ruhr-University Bochum for the Department of Applied Geology.
