Dr. Paul Bowyer is a climate impacts and adaptation scientist in the climate change and transformation department at GERICS. His main areas of work include global and regional level climate impacts and vulnerability in the agriculture, forestry, and ecosystem services sectors; and understanding user needs with respect to climate information. This work is undertaken in the context of trying to develop prototype climate service products that can inform and support decision makers in their climate adaptation planning. During his time at GERICS, Paul has contributed to the development of a number of products including the Climate-Focus-Paper series, climate impact hotspot mapping, and was the main author of the GERICS adaptation guidebook.
Paul is also involved in contributing to the development of the EU Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), having recently completed the SECTEUR project, which investigated user needs in a number of different economic sectors.
Paul spent the first part of his career working on a range of different remote sensing projects, where the focus was chiefly on inverting canopy reflectance models to estimate various biophysical and biochemical properties of vegetation, for applications including wildland fire risk modelling, quantifying uncertainty in the terrestrial carbon cycle, and human disease transmission prediction. Paul now has almost ten years’ experience in the climate change adaptation field, having moved from the British Antarctic Survey to the University of Oxford in 2008, to work on the UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP). Paul has worked on projects funded by a range of sources including the UK NERC, Defra, EU, ESA, BMBF, and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).
