Dr. Henry Wu joined the Earth League Secretariate in early 2024 as a Scientific Officer at the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS) in the German Committee for Sustainability Research in Future Earth (DKN). He is responsible for coordinating and content contribution to the synthesis products of The Earth League. One of the main products produced by The Earth League is the annual report 10 New Insights on Climate Science, providing the latest significant climate research to help with the negotiations at the annual UNFCCC COP. Additional products include the 10 Must Haves Initiative, to help decisions makers in both public and private sectors lead the necessary changes to halt and reverse the course of the current climate crises.
Henry is experienced in coordination of interdisciplinary scientific networks with extended background in strategic and conceptualization of tasks. He recently led the successful content creation and launch of the IOC/UNESCO online training course on „Co-Design for the Ocean Science” for the „Ocean Science for Sustainable Development”.
Before joining GERICS and The Earth League, Henry was a researcher working between the ocean-climate nexus at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research in Bremen leading a junior research group funded by the climate research initiative, Make Our Planet Great Again. He has previously worked for the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Paris, France, and at the MARUM-Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen. His dissertation and scientific research over the past few decades investigated the changing state of our ocean and climate using corals as an archive of climate of the most recent 300 years over human-relevant timescales.
Henry received his BS in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Biology from the University of Southern California and his MS from the University of Pennsylvania with a concentration in Conservation Biology and Resources Management. He received his PhD in Climate and Environmental Systems from the University at Albany – State University of New York and conducted his doctoral research at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University in the city of New York.
Henry also has great interest in science communication as he joined “Scientists for Future” in Bremen with the Klimabahn (Climate Train) Initiative giving public talks on the local tram network on climate change.
