Climateurope2: Supporting and standardising climate services in Europe and beyond

Background:
Climate information plays a central role in achieving climate neutrality and climate resilience in Europe. However, climate information should be provided appropriately and used effectively so that it can be integrated into decision-making processes to better manage risks and seize opportunities. This can be achieved through Climate Services, which are used to provide climate information for decision-making.
The market and demand for climate information has made impressive progress in recent years and is expected to continue to grow in the foreseeable future. As the number and diversity of actors that make up the climate services landscape continues to grow and evolve, new challenges are emerging. Those involved in the development and delivery of climate services often do not know about each other, and there is a lack of inter- and transdisciplinary knowledge. Furthermore, quality assurance, relevant standards and other forms of quality assurance (such as guidelines and best practices) for climate services lag behind.
Building on existing networks and the work of the former EU Climateurope project, as well as other past and current initiatives, Climateurope2 is working to support and standardise climate services to ensure their relevance, credibility, legitimacy and authority, and to build mutual trust between providers and users.
About Climateurope2
Climateurope2 is a four and a half year Horizon Europe project (Coordination and Support Actions) that addresses the need for timely provision and effective use of climate information. The project aims to support the network of climate service providers and to develop standardisation procedures for future equitable and quality-assured climate services that are useful for decision-making in all sectors of society.
The Climateurope2 consortium consists of 33 partners (3 associated) in 13 countries. The project is coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC) and started in September 2022.
Hereon/GERICS is involved in several Climateurope2 work packages:
Development of a framework for standardisation of climate services, business models and innovation, market monitoring (GERICS lead) and support to the network of climate services in Europe.
