"The sugar beet of the future: model- and data-based yield scenarios for climate-adapted selection in breeding (Beets4Future)"

In the project "The sugar beet of the future" (Beets4Future), GERICS examines - under the auspices of the Institute of Plant Production and Plant Breeding, Department of Arable and Plant Cultivation at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and together with KWS SAAT SE & Co. KGaA - the influence of climate change on sugar beet.

Sugar beet is an economically important crop with Germany as the world's third largest producer. It is used primarily in the food industry, but also in the production of biofuels. At the same time, its high site requirements, especially its susceptibility to drought, make sugar beet grown on current sites sensitive to climate change.

The project will investigate which yield scenarios follow from the current range of climate scenarios and which plant breeding adaptation measures, for example an adapted choice of selection site or the integration of indirect selection traits, are suitable to counteract negative developments.

The spatial focus of the project is on the cultivation and breeding areas in Central Europe that are relevant for Germany.
