Furthermore, GERICS informed the audience about the development of user-initiated climate service products and how to generate follow-up products. The WASCAL Science Symposium is considered as flagship program of WASCAL that seeks to showcase WASCAL‘s major achievements since its inception.

At this symposium also the second phase of the WASCAL Research Agenda Program (WRAP 2.0) was launched. The new WASCAL Research and Action Plan covers the period from 2018 to 2021. It is a plan built on key research themes which are a mixture of regional priorities and global concerns regarding approaches and actions to address climate change and climate variabilities effectively.

Prof. Dr. Daniela Jacob, the director of GERICS, is a member of the WASCAL Scientific Advisory Committee. The “West African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Use” (WASCAL) is a BMBF founded project for West Africa including the countries Bénin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sénegal, Togo and Germany.
