Two presentations from GERICS staff members Armelle Remedio and Joerg Cortekar were given on a method on calculating future extremes and how we can apply the GERICS City Toolkit in Sao Paulo.

The workshop had a focus on climate and air quality modelling including topics on hydrological extremes and city modelling. The interplay of these global and regional scale interactions on a very local scale was discussed on the Itaim Paulista case study as well as how local actors and stakeholders mitigate and adapt to the impacts of the change in climate as well as governance. The preparations for the next case study in Natal, Northeast of Brazil were also discussed in the workshop.

On the last day, the Klimapolis Laboratory was launched with two inaugural lectures from Prof. Dr. Paulo Artaxo and Dr. Cathrin Zengerling and two panel discussions. The lectures and panel discussions highlighted the urgent need to tackle simultaneously air pollution and climate change issues as well as discussion on transformative research that provide science for accountable urban governance. The formal launch of the Klimapolis Laboratory ended with closing remarks from Prof. Dr. Guy Brasseur (Max-Planck-Institut for Meteorology, Hamburg), Prof. Dr. Pedro Dias (Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences of the University of São Paulo, IAG-USP), Prof. Dr. Anita Engels (University Hamburg), and Dr. Tercio Ambrizzi (IAG-USP).
