On 22 August 2024, the WASCAL WRAP 2.0 LANDSURF project team presented the final version of the Decision Support System (DSS) developed in the project to the users in a virtual workshop. A total of 18 participants from Benin, Niger, Mali and Germany took part in the workshop, which was led by Dr Torsten Weber from GERICS. The coordinator of the project, Prof Heiko Paeth from the University of Würzburg, opened the workshop with a short speech in which he emphasised the importance of decision support tools for coping with climate change in West Africa, and the need to co-design and co-develop such tools together with their users. Afterwards, Lorenz König from the University of Halle presented the LANDSURF DSS to the audience in a live showcase. It provides specific climate change information for the agricultural sector and can also be used for water and risk management in West Africa.
Another highlight of the workshop was the presentation of the FURIFLOOD Decision Support Systems by Lorenz König from the University of Halle and Manuel Rauch from the University of Augsburg. The web portal provides information on heavy rainfall and flood risks for selected river catchments in West Africa. At the end of the workshop, Prof Vincent O. Ajayi from the Federal University of Technology Akure moderated a Q&A session on the DSS and collected feedback from participants. The GERICS sub-projects of LANDSURF will end in August 2024.
