Amelie Schmitt has been working at GERICS as a PostDoc in the Helmholtz Young Investigator Group "Uncertain Water Resources under Global Change" (UwaRes) since February 2023. Her main task is to couple a hydrological model with the regional climate model REMO to investigate the interactions between irrigation and regional climate change in more detail. Her research interests focus on the exchange processes between the atmospheric boundary layer and the underlying surface, both over irrigated fields and vegetation in rainforests or sea ice.
Amelie Schmitt completed her studies in meteorology at the University of Hamburg and then worked as a PhD student at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven from 2012 to 2015. In her dissertation, she investigated measurements from a flight campaign in the Arctic with the aim of better understanding turbulent exchange processes in the polar atmospheric boundary layer. She then worked as a postdoc in the sea ice remote sensing group at the University of Hamburg until 2018, where she developed algorithms to measure the thickness of thin sea ice using passive microwave sensors from space. In another postdoc at the University of Hamburg, she worked on the turbulent exchange processes between the vegetation layer in the Amazon rainforest and the atmosphere until 2023. The aim of the work was to improve the representation of these so-called canopy processes in a land model.
